Konnichiwa, my name is Melanie R. Nicholls. I am a multimedia artist that enjoys working with many different medians to create. I enjoy the colorful, kawaii, sparkles side to life and find inspiration in the Japanese street fashion culture and many alternative styles in Western Culture as well. My life long love of color and nail polish, jolted my hobby of painting nails, into becoming a licensed Nail Technician.
I graduated from CUNY Brooklyn College with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts. During my time at Brooklyn College, some of my favorite courses were, 3D Graphics and Animations. Years of playing videos and coming across many diverse characters, it was always a dream of mine to make my own. In this course, I got as far as building landscapes and rooms but I've continued to self teach myself to one day make characters, in my head.
Another course I enjoyed was Internet Art & Design. From my senior year of high school, when I was first introduced to Dreamweaver, web graphics and design have been a passion of mine. Throughout the course, I went from basic to more detailed website design and also dabbled in Adobe Flash. The course that had the most impact on me, was Multimedia & Two-Dimensional Animation. I was able to define the type of artist I want to be: Multimedia Artist. I told stories through photography, web graphics and learned stop animations. Through this course, I had to use different mediums for my projects and this allowed me to create in ways I never thought possible.
In 2014, I participated in the New York Parks Department: Digital Work's Program (now called: TechOpps). In this program, I had a refresher course in Adobe Creative Suite Programs: Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. The purpose of the program was to prepare me for certification in becoming a Adobe Certified Associate. I achieved certification in Photoshop and because of dedication to the program, I was awarded a laptop.
Where Am I Now?
I am now a member of COOP. I've gone from being unemployed and discouraged on what I to do next with myself to being part of community that is all about successing. Digital marketing is a new venture for me and I'm enthusiastic to learn all that I can. For the longest time, I've struggled solo to find my way but being part of this community, I have confidence that I'll find what I'm looking for, knowing I'm not alone. Through networking and skill building, I want to be challenged in ways I've never been and look forward to what’s ahead.
Where Am I Going?
I am a aspiring multimedia artist. I am going to use the creativity I have stored inside me, to brighten the world and open the minds. I'm inspired my the street fashion of Japan and want to be apart of the that world in anyway possible. The marketing skills I learn in COOP, I want to use them to give me the ability to work on an international level. I wish to infuse all my interests in my career and always find joy in working, that I can never call it so.
- Unique - My uniqueness shows up through my personal style and wit. I’ve “followed the beat of my own drum” throughout my life. Along with the desire to “create”, my perspective on life is to make things colorful and lighthearted, whenever possible.
- Trustworthy - I do my best to be a honest and dependable. It’s not just being a “secret keeper” but I try to tell people what they need to hear, versus what the want to.
- Tech Savy - I know my way around both PC and MAC. I’ve fixed issues on my own by just researching. I’ve saved money by doing so and the time spent taught me something new.

2 Companies I really admire and Why
Manic Panic is a store chain based in NYC, that specializes in alternative hair, makeup and fashion accessories. What makes the company special is there vibrant, vegan based color hair dyes, that have made them an industry leader in alternative, Hair Coloring. I admire both founders of the company, sisters Tish & Snooky. Originally backup singers, their ambition lead to the creation of the Manic Panic boutique in 1977 and helped grow the Punk scene of the late '70s. The company brought alternative looks to the mainstream by introducing wild hair dyes with matching colors for lips, nails and eyes.
Lush is a cosmetic company located in the United Kingdom. The company produces a variety of items for the face, hair and body include: soaps, shampoos, shower gels, lotions, moisturizers, scrubs, masks and most popular: Bath Bombs. What makes the company special, are their items being made with vegetarian or vegan recipes. I admire founders Mark Constantine and Liz Weir for expanding their company from selling their recipes to other companies in the early 80's to growing Lush into what it is today. I also admire that Lush does not buy from companies practice animal testing.
