Short Intro.  Hi! My name is Mariel. I love to travel, work out and make art.

Where Have I Been? I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications at Brooklyn College. I volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at the International Center of Photography. I am an artist and I love to photograph people because they have the most important stories to tell.

Where Am I Now?  I currently work at the Apple Store in their Flagship location as an Operations Specialist, where I maintain the Back of House (fulfillment area) and interact with customers in a fast paced environment.  I am a part of COOP, which is a non-profit post graduate Digital Marketing Apprenticeship. It’s a positive community that supports growth and development. I am currently learning SEO, SEM, Google Analytics and Paid Social.

Where Am I Going? I’m eager to grow in a company that will expand my digital marketing skills. I aspire to be an Arts Director for a Center in a community that has not been gentrified. It entails a community coming together to express their dreams, desires, sadness, anger, frustration and above all, hope. I want my center to serve as a “trunk”, much like a tree with its branches to give people a sense of being, of progress, of a better tomorrow and above all no boundaries.

2 Companies I really admire and Why

Apple is an American multinational technology company that designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. I’ve grown up using Apple Products since I was a little girl. Their products have enriched my life in every single way, from listening to music to taking pictures. I remembered when Steve Jobs would come out and I’d get butterflies in my stomach because he dared to be different.

Twitch is an online live streaming platform where broadcasters can release and perform their content in real-time with viewer interaction live. I first found out of Twitch several years ago when I wanted to find a hobby that doesn't involve being the viewer but a content creator. Now as a live broadcaster, I consider Twitch as my second hobby, influencing many individuals around the world with my creative content and entertainment.

Netflix is an American multinational entertainment company. Netflix expanded its business with the introduction of streaming media, while retaining the DVD and Blu-ray rental service. I really admire that they introduced a generous maternity leave policy for their employees. It shows me that they really care for their employees. As a woman, this demonstrates women's rights, employee satisfaction and work life balance.

Let me tell you about ...

Setting the stage. Just prior to my senior year, I discovered that I would not have enough credits to graduate in four years unless I hunkered down by taking an increased number of classes.  I was also working at Apple and my part-time job required me to work 25 hours per week.  I went from school to work and work to school. I was determined to take these classes, pass them and graduate in four years.

The beginning. Then, disaster struck when I received an e-mail from school advising that I was being denied the right to walk with my graduating class because after all the work I put in, I was still three credits short. I would have to wait a whole year because of three credits.

The middle. I walked out of the campus - I needed to clear my head and put things into perspective.  I went to a museum and remembered seeing an exhibition about the Hip Hop Revolution.  As I looked at each piece of work, it reminded me that each artist had struggled to make it. They probably had a lot of rejections before some discovered their talent yet they were persistent and ultimately got recognized for their work.  I needed to get recognized for my effort and I wanted to walk down with my class.  So I mustered up my dignity and with some encouragement from my parents, I went back to school and petitioned to walk with my class. I would not be dejected.

The End.  I would talk to anyone who was willing to hear me and I was willing to be persistent. Just like those artist in the exhibition, I too could succeed.

Reflection. That day, I started out feeling defeated but I rose above it and I told myself I wouldn’t go down without a fight. A week later, they approved my petition to walk.
