Short Intro. Hi! My name is Skylar Wang. I studied visual art for four years in Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. On my free time I to work on my garden, make new paintings, and create wire sculptures.
Where Have I Been? I graduated from Baruch College in May of 2016 with a Bachelor of Business Degree in International Marketing, and a minor in Psychology. In the past I have worked in a restaurant called Dragon Garden located in upstate New York. I worked as a promoter by sending out fliers to residential areas, and taking call orders as a receptionist.
Where Am I Now? Currently I am working at Guan Yuan Trading located in Woodhaven, Queens. It is a very small store, and I have been helping out at that location for multiple years. In the beginning I started out by restocking shelves, then I slowing worked my way up to be the cashier and also customer service. Working in customer service, I am required to answer any questions the customers might have. Sometime the item a customer is looking for is not sold at the store, I will suggest some alternatives. I also try to resolve any issue customers have the with purchased product. The manager at the store is not a native English speaker, and there are times when there are some miscommunication between the manager and the customers. I tried to resolve those misunderstanding by translating in Mandarin Chinese. Through my work experience, I have learned how to deal with uncooperative customers and how to make sure my service will be able to satisfy them to the best of my ability.
While I enjoy working at my current location, I dream of bigger things. I want to expand my work experience and I want to explore more opportunities, which is why I have joined COOP. COOP is a community that helps underrepresented graduate student to explore career opportunity. The community is made up of people that knows and have experienced many things themselves. I want to learn from other people who can understand what it is that I need in order to further my career. With the help if other people in the community, I also want to be able to give something back.I am an digital marketing apprentice at a non-profit called COOP.
Where Am I Going? In the near future I hope to well versed in leading groups as the team leader. I will also be working towards in acquiring more experience in project management. I think these skills are important and will be useful in my career, and also in my personal life. 10 years from now, I want to see myself working at steady job that I find fulfilling. I want to be excited to go to work and share my ideas. I also want be become a role model for the younger generation.
- I can be adaptive to the change to my environment.
- I can be creative
- I can be supportive and work well in a team.
1 Learning Target

2 Companies I really admire and Why
National Geographic Society is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational institution in the world. The idea of them is amazing; sharing amazing adventures and educate the reader too. The articles printed are eye opening, the pictures are also breathtaking. When I was younger, I had wanted to work with them; taking pictures from places around the world. I wanted to be part of this amazing team and be the one that gets to share those magnificent shots. However for now, reading a new issue each month is enough for me.
Innisfree is a South Korean cosmetics brand, they sell products ranging from makeup to skin care products for both men and women. The brand is the first all-natural company in South Korea. It is also one of the few Korean brands that uses organic ingredients certified by the ECOCERT organization. The skin around the face is a very dedicate area, and the products used on it need to be made with good ingredients. I have used this brand's product and I love them. I feel like I can trust their products and I love the interesting ingredients they used; such as Jeju volcanic clay and Jeju orchids.
Let me tell you about my last semester in college
Setting the Stage During the last semester of college, I took a mandatory course for my major.
The Beginning Our professor was very disorganized and the entire class was left to fetch by ourselves. However, the professor still wanted to grade us heavily on the work we do. During our first assignment, no on in the class knew what the professor expected from us. Quite a lot of people made mistakes on the assignment because they were not sure what the instruction was.
The Middle The same issue happened again during the second assignment. Our professor was very vague with what he wants, and gave out conflicting instructions to different people. Not wanting to make the same mistake as last time, I was the first one to ask the professor to clarify his instructions. After clarifying what was expected of us I relay the information back to the rest of the class. Later, I decided it would be best if I start a group chat using the Facebook messaging tool with the class, so that it would be easier to support each other in case someone have an issue with the professor’s instruction again.
The End The chat group was a very good idea, because a lot of people had a hard time decoding our professor’s instructions. We also used the group chat to inform other classmates when one of us is having similar issuing and needs email the professor about it.
Reflections When facing a challenge, it would be better to try to find a solution first instead of waiting for others to do it for you.
