COOP Careers closes the social capital gap by recruiting and investing deeply in diverse, low-income, and first-generation grads from the City University of New York, San Francisco State, and other urban public colleges.
Our flagship program is the Digital Apprenticeship. Peer cohorts of 16 motivated, underemployed grads meet nightly for 16 weeks (200 hours) to learn technical skills, build community, and jumpstart careers in digital marketing and data analytics.
Each cohort is led by a team of four captains, “near-peer” COOP alumni who serve as coaches, mentors, and guides on top of busy day jobs at local ad agencies and tech companies. In parallel, COOP helps these same employers meet, interview, and hire more and more diverse candidates.
Since 2014, COOP has run 50 cohorts with over 700 alumni, on our way to 10,000 by 2025. Four-in-five alumni work full-time, earning an average of $45,000 after 12 months (3x pre-program average) and almost $70,000 after three years (2x peer baseline).
Long-term, COOP aims to double lifetime income of alumni—fueling upward mobility and fulfilling our collective promise of higher education.
COOP Careers is seeking a passionate and experienced Director of Finance to support a quickly growing, vibrant national organization, currently operating in NYC and San Francisco.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Finance will handle the accounting and financial activities of the firm. Primary responsibilities will include day to day accounting, financial reporting, management of accounts payable as well as budgeting and forecasting (FP&A).
The Director of Finance will also oversee payroll, benefits, and other administrative/HR related functions . This position will interact regularly with top management and the Board.
Collaborate closely with the CEO and COO for all organizational financial objectives and initiatives
Develop the annual budget and cash flow projections
Monitor variances vs actual;rRecommend necessary changes/improvements in order to meet budgeted targets
Site Management (NYC & SF)
Oversee the preparation of monthly financials and other periodic financial reports
Reconcile all bank accounts and monitor cash balances to ensure sufficient cash is on hand at all times to fund operations
Oversee the expense reimbursement process
Prepare and present financial reports to management and the Board
Evaluate current systems, policies and procedures and propose enhancements
Assist with developing, managing and monitoring internal controls
Coordinate with and assist third parties with financial audits as well as tax and regulatory filings
Keep up to date with financial, tax, compliance and legal regulations pertaining to the organization
Ad hoc projects as directed by CEO & COO
Partner with the leadership of various functional areas within COOP to both speak to and support the dynamic work of COOP
Participate in at least 2-3 COOP programmatic events monthly
Strong commitment to COOP’s mission and vision; thrives in a fast-paced environment; enjoys teamwork and collaboration
Roll-up-the-sleeves mentality. Able to work independently while at the same time be a team player and consensus builder
Strong interpersonal skills
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience
Non-profit experience strongly preferred
Skilled in managing up and working with diverse audiences and stakeholder groups
Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
Experience with Quickbooks or similar accounting systems
Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
Experience building financial projections/models
Able to build, maintain and monitor financial & internal controls
Knowledge of US GAAP, tax regulations and compliance issues pertaining to the not-for-profit sector
Track record of building efficiencies and implementing process improvements
Willingness to adapt and contribute to COOP’s feedback-driven culture
